Studying Creative Writing

Our department is home to experienced and industry-leading writers who are specialists in their field. The School's research was ranked 3rd for quality in the UK in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework . All impact was classified as 'world-leading'.

Our rich culture of research is complimented by the frequent public readings, seminars and workshops we host within the School.

Our MPhil, PhD in Creative Writing offers you the opportunity to develop a substantial, original piece of creative work and a related academic thesis.

Our supervision expertise, partnerships and passion for creative writing offers you an energetic, creative and well-resourced research culture to immerse yourself in.

We offer MPhil and PhD in Creative Writing supervision from a diverse range of experienced writers who are recognised specialists in their field. Areas of expertise include:

• prose fiction, including fiction for children or young adults
• writing for stage, screen, or radio
• writing creative non-fiction

We have strong links with a variety of partners, who all provide a wealth of materials, knowledge and opportunities:

We are closely linked to the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts (NCLA), which puts you in regular contact with leading national and international creative practitioners. This develops your awareness of the creative, social and cultural issues that impacts and influences creative writing.

Our rich research culture is usually fed by public readings, seminars and workshops by staff, visiting artists and postgraduates. However, this is subject to COVID-19 restrictions. We also jointly sponsor The Newcastle/Bloodaxe Poetry Lectures with Bloodaxe Books. Recent writers include:

Creative transdisciplinary HDR/Doctoral training programme

In creative areas we provide a cutting-edge research network of PhD and Masters students who are exploring the future of the creative areas that sit at the intersection of Arts, Music, Media, Communication, Design, Science, Technology and Engineering.

Designed as a trans-disciplinary doctoral training network, we seek to engage PhD and master’s students wanting to undertake research training where real-world challenges faced by private, public and third sector partners will provide the research training context. Transmission also presents an opportunity for industry to design research projects that can be worked on by PhD and Master’s students, who are supervised in tandem with industry professionals.

Discipline based HDR/Doctoral training programme

Doctoral and Masters students work collaboratively with staff and colleagues doing practice based and traditional research together in their respective discipline areas. How much will it cost?

Australian students are currently exempt from paying tuition fees for MPhil and PhD study. As a domestic student you are awarded a tuition fee scholarship for your higher degree by research (HDR) program under the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP): four years full-time (or part-time equivalent) for a PhD, or two years full-time (or part-time equivalent) for Research Masters. You will be required to complete your degree within the RTP entitlement period.

International student costs

The main type of financial support available to both domestic and international graduate researchers is in the form of scholarships.

Who can apply?

Even if you don't have an Honours or Masters degree, you can apply to undertake a Research Masters, and, depending on progress, transfer to a PhD after your first full-time year of study. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Entry requirements.

A 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in English. If you are applying for a PhD you also need a master's degree.

Along with your application you will be asked to submit examples of your creative writing, including two short stories, six poems or a script.
